Japan’s Meteorological Agency lifted a tsunami warning late Monday following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of southwest Japan.
The earthquake, which occurred shortly after 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET), triggered an initial tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures on the southern island of Kyushu.
While a small tsunami wave of approximately 1 meter (3.2 feet) made landfall within 30 minutes, the warning was eventually lifted as the situation stabilized.
However, local authorities cautioned residents to remain cautious, as second and third waves could be stronger than the initial one.
The earthquake in Japan today sent tremors through the region, reminding citizens of the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
Japan is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The magnitude-6.9 quake caused brief panic as tsunami waves were initially expected to impact the coast, but the danger soon passed after officials confirmed the waves had receded.
Despite the all-clear on the tsunami warning, authorities urged residents to stay away from the coastline, as aftershocks and potentially larger waves remain a risk.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency has advised continued vigilance in earthquake preparedness, warning that another earthquake could strike at any time, especially in a region known for Japan’s earthquakes.
The agency also highlighted the potential hazards posed by cliff collapses and falling rocks, which could become more dangerous if further seismic events occur.
In a country still haunted by the 2011 Tohoku disaster, when a 9.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a deadly tsunami, authorities are taking no chances.
That tragedy, one of Japan’s most devastating natural disasters, claimed over 20,000 lives, submerged entire cities, and caused widespread destruction.
With the country’s ongoing susceptibility to earthquakes in Japan today, experts continue to monitor seismic activity closely, urging both residents and visitors to be prepared.
As of now, the tsunami warning has been lifted, but the event serves as a stark reminder of Japan’s ongoing seismic vulnerability and the importance of disaster readiness in the face of unpredictable natural events like earthquakes in Japan.
